The year 2024 has come to an end, the opportunity to take stock of the road safety figures and they are not good.
The prefect of Seine-Maritime indeed draws up “an alarming observation”, with 55 people killed on the department's roads, compared to 38 in 2023 over the same period.
Vulnerable users represent 26 deaths out of the 55 recorded
For the moment, the prefecture's services inform that 690 bodily accidents have occurred (709 in 2023), a decrease of 2.7% compared to 2023. The number of injured has fallen by 10% per year. compared to 2023 (830 in 2024, 918 in 2023). “Vulnerable users represent almost half of the deceased victims: 26 deaths out of the 55 recorded,” argues the prefecture, which adds that the main causes of mortality on the roads remain excessive speed, alcohol consumption, of narcotics, “technological distractors and non-compliance with the Highway Code.
In 2024, 230,000 blood alcohol screenings carried out
Throughout 2024, police and gendarmerie forces have increasedroad control operationss, with the aim of preventing risky behavior and ensuring the safety of road users. “During this period, nearly 230,000 alcohol screening checks were carried out, i.e. 7% more than in 2023: 2,707 offenses were noted,” detail the prefecture services.
Regarding drugs, 24,644 checks were carried out, or 38% more than in 2023: 1,600 offenses were noted.
Driving license: 3,397 suspensions
In 2024, 3,397 driving licenses were thus suspended for reasons mainly linked to the consumption of alcohol and drugs, or even speed.
Prevention remained a priority for safety stakeholders in 2024, in order to combat road insecurity: 120 prevention and awareness actions were carried out near schools, associations, businesses, communities, state service agents and the general public. “Two hundred thousand people were also made aware of risky behavior (alcohol, drugs, speed, etc.), new so-called soft mobility, the risks associated with driving motorized two-wheelers and professional road risk,” recalls the prefecture.
Faced with the worrying figures at the end of 2024, the prefect calls for “the greatest caution on the roads of the department, during the end-of-year celebrations”. Measures restricting and consuming alcohol on public roads are in force, from Tuesday December 31 (3 p.m.) to Wednesday January 1 (10 a.m.), throughout the Seine-Maritime department.
A massive inspection system planned for the end of the year
“A system of massive checks on the ground will be deployed during the school holiday period, during the day and in the evening, in order to ensure the safety of road users, whether they are going to or returning from festivities. These checks will continue in the coming weeks,” warn the prefecture services.
