Friday July 5 and Saturday July 6, 2024, lovers of Breton art objects will be able to go to the 21e edition of the auction, l’Âme bretonne. Books, earthenware, paintings, furniture, costumes… no fewer than 1,163 pieces will be offered during this large-scale sale which will begin at 10 a.m., at the auction house, at 105, avenue de Kerrien, in Quimper (Finistère). Friday will be dedicated to classical Brittany and Saturday to modern Brittany.
A tribute to the Le Meur brothers
This 21e edition will highlight the collection of the Quimper brothers Jean-Michel and Gilbert Le Meur. Collectors of Breton art, particularly Odetta earthenware, they loved to promote local heritage and share their discoveries. Both deceased, part of their collection was bequeathed to the Breton Departmental Museum, the Quimper Museum of Fine Arts and the town of Clohars-Carnoët.
The centerpiece of the collection
The centerpiece of this sale, according to Me Tiphaine Le Grignou, auctioneer organizing the event, is a painting by Charles Cottet called Evening rays, port of Camaretpainted in 1892. This painting depicting sailing boats on the Breton coast is a replica of the painting exhibited at the Musée d’Orsay, emblematic of the painter’s style.
The auctioneer’s favorite
The auctioneer’s favorite is the Pardon of Sainte-Anne-la-Paludby Ernest Guérin. It is a watercolor triptych, which represents a scene of forgiveness. It is a rather exceptional work, the format is very important with a lot of details. ” she explains.
It is also one of the works in the sale with the highest estimated price: around €18,000.
