10 billion passwords leaked!

A file containing nearly 10 billion stolen passwords has been discovered by security researchers. These passwords from data breaches were collected over the last twenty years. They could be exploited to crack online accounts using brute force.

For hackers, it’s a real treasure. The file “rockyou2024.txt” contains 9,948,575,739 unique passwords in plain text. Posted on July 4 and discovered by Cybernews, this compilation is quite simply the largest in history. The RockYou2024 leak is a compilation of real passwords used by individuals all over the world. Revealing so many passwords to malicious actors significantly increases the risk of brute force attacks. “, warn the researchers.

Brute force attack

The passwords in the file were collected over the years and security breaches that affected more than 4,000 databases — some dating back more than two decades. The previous RockYou2021 “volume” contained 8.4 billion passwords; between 2021 and 2024, that’s 1.5 billion more, a 15% increase.

Hackers in possession of this file can use it for brute force attacks, in other words, to test each password in an attempt to unlock the account. By automating the process, a hacker can test millions and millions of passwords in an instant. Fortunately, there are protection measures that limit the number of entries, and that impose timers after several failed attempts. But a system not protected against this type of attack can quickly succumb to them.

Ordinary users are not completely helpless against this threat. They can enter their email address into databases like HaveIBeenPwned or Cybernews’ own tool to find out if their passwords and other personal data have been leaked online. This then allows them to take appropriate security measures, such as changing their password or adopting passkeys for compatible services.
