Decided by Emmanuel Macron, the dissolution of the National Assembly has indeed resulted in a bitter defeat for his camp. The “Ensemble” coalition, essentially bringing together the Renaissance, Horizons and Agir parties, obtained 20.76% of the votes in the first round of the legislative elections this Sunday compared to nearly 26% in 2022, according to the official results published during the night from Sunday to Monday. It should thus lose many seats of deputies, at the end of the second round next Sunday.

Emmanuel Macron’s support bloc obtains – as in the last European elections – its highest scores in the west of France, as well as in Paris and in the west of the Île-de-France. In these territories, it quite often manages to exceed 30% of the votes. Conversely, it is very often left behind with less than 20% or even less than 15% of the votes in the rest of the country, particularly in the South-East.

Candidate elected, qualified in duel, in triangular, eliminated… How does this translate into results? Two Ensemble candidates were elected deputies in the first round: Pierre Cazeneuve, in Hauts-de-Seine; and Mikaele Seo, in the Wallis and Futuna constituency. Conversely, the presidential coalition was immediately eliminated in 156 constituencies. Everywhere else, she will have to face one or – more often – two opponents in the second round.

But be careful: in some constituencies, the Ensemble candidate who came third has already announced that he or she is withdrawing from the race in the second round, in order to “block” the National Rally. This is the case, in particular, of the Minister of Overseas Territories Marie Guévenoux in Essonne and of the Secretary of State for Urban Affairs Sabrina Agresti-Roubache in Bouches-du-Rhône.

More votes than in 2022… thanks to participation

This rout of the outgoing presidential majority is visible everywhere in France. Indeed, it obtains a lower score than in 2022 in the majority of constituencies, often with a drop of 5 percentage points.

Ensemble, however, gathers more votes than in 2022. This may seem paradoxical, but the explanation is simple: this presidential bloc obtains a lower score among voters… much more numerous than two years ago, with a participation of 66.71%. A small consolation, which will not be enough to hide a heavy defeat at the polls.
