“The men are superb, with long ebony black hair”

The Charente-Maritime press has already reported the presence of a camp of gypsies on the outskirts of Saintes, La Rochelle and Marennes. They arrived yesterday in Angoulême. And are on the reception area reserved for them, near the boulevard Mon Logis. There are seven caravans and fourteen horses. The caravan is made up of about twenty people, men, women and children. Seven tents have been pitched and the horses tied to iron stakes. Coming from Hungary and perfectly in order, they work as pot-repairers. The women are young and would not lack charm if they were not dressed so poorly. The men are superb: tall, they have long ebony black hair. They wear Hungarian boots and the leaders wear Cossack jackets in the style of Tarass Boulba.

The editorial team advises you

The women sport magnificent hair tied into braids with buttons. Even poorly dressed, the little children who stay near the tents where meals are prepared are no less charming with eyes that shine like precious stones. Some people from Angoumois came to find them with a few items to repair and for small jobs to be done. This will give them money to feed the children and buy some tobacco.

Remember, last year, their stay went just as satisfactorily. Some accuse them of being the perpetrators of petty crimes. Wrongly and without any proof. No scuffles, damage or dumping of garbage have been recorded to date.
