Jujubes are back on market stalls in Reunion: a sweet pleasure!

Jujube is one of the old-fashioned fruits whose taste always delights the initiated. It is the season, the harvests are underway in the fields. This is the case in Saint-Gilles where the Law-Yat have been working for years in this production.

Crunchy and tangy, jujubes are back on the shelves of Reunion Island. An unmissable sweet treat for customers:

“The small one is more popular, you can even make punches with it. I really like “.

“Well yes the jujubes are good. The small ones are sweeter, but there are also the big ones”

This small fruit of Chinese origin, Pierre-Olivier produces at least 4 tons in the year. The large jujube is picked by hand unlike: “We know when it is mature when it reaches a stage with a slightly light yellow color. The jujube tree needs a very dry and hot climate, so it will be found in the areas between the Possession and the Étang-Salé and also in the lowlands »

The harvest lasts from mid-June to the end of July, after harvesting the jujubes, we now move on to sorting:

“It’s important because customers don’t like them the same way. The greens are a little crunchier and the browner they are, the riper they are,” Pierre-Olivier explains.

Full of vitamin D, jujube can also be made into jam and compote.
