Sixteen departments are still on orange alert by Météo-France due to the risk of violent storms.

Heavy rainfall, hail, strong gusts of wind and intense electrical activity affected a large part of France, from the South-West to the North-East, this Saturday June 29.

If orange vigilance was lifted for several departments during the evening, sixteen are still affected this Saturday evening at 10 p.m., while, as Météo-France indicates, “the storms are gradually shifting towards the north and the East”.

This “extended stormy wave” concerns a vast portion of the eastern flank of the country and “the most virulent storms are now organized around a line going from the Jura to Luxembourg”, warns the meteorological institute.

“Diluvian storms”

Images taken by residents demonstrate the intensity of the phenomenon. In Augé, in the Deux-Sèvres department, a century-old sequoia was struck by lightning and was literally pulverized in a few seconds and collapsed.

According to initial data from Météo-France, the wind is blowing strongly like the Yonne where a gust was recorded at 130km/h, while one at 107km/ha was recorded in Troyes, in Aube.

The precipitation is also quite significant, with, in the afternoon, “torlenuous storms impacted the department of Tarn where we recorded 61mm in 1 hour in Dourgne, 56mm in 1 hour in Montredon and 66.6mm in 3 hours in same place”, indicates Météo-France.

This Saturday’s storms also bring hail. In Doulaincourt-Saucourt (52), witnesses observed hailstones several centimeters in diameter.

On the other side of the Rhine, bad weather led to the temporary interruption of the meeting between Germany and Denmark during the round of 16 of the Euro football. The match was able to resume its course.
