Metz. Do you know what dangers non-traditional pets can pose?

On May 2, 2024, the National Academy of Medicine published a study detailing the risks associated with keeping non-traditional pets (NTPs). These animals, whether domestic (rabbits, goats, pigs) or non-domestic (rodents, hedgehogs, reptiles, amphibians, birds), are increasingly present in French homes.

However, their detention requires special precautions due to the risks they represent, particularly for children under 5 years old.

Associated risks

These animals, often asymptomatic, can transmit infectious agents through simple close contact, especially when they sleep in a child’s room. Children’s vulnerability is accentuated by their natural behavior of frequently putting their hands in their mouths. According to the study, “biting remains the most frequent means of transmission of pathogens.” Among the most common diseases are salmonellosis, lymphocytic choriomeningitis or psittacosis.

Doctor Cynthia Anania, specialist at the Véto’Bépine clinic in Peltre, emphasizes that zoonoses are rare but exist. “Vigilance is required, particularly for salmonellosis in birds, sometimes they are imported where they are not systematically tested,” she explains. However, she adds that owners are increasingly attentive to the health of their animals, not hesitating to consult regularly.
