With Canada Day just days away, 70 per cent of citizens believe their country is “broken,” according to a report from Ipsos released Friday. Young adults are more likely to agree with that statement.

Nearly one in five individuals aged 18 to 34 (78%) hold this opinion. The vast majority of people who tend to vote Conservative also agree (96%).

This quote originally comes from Pierre Poilievre, leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, who has criticized the state of the country on several occasions in recent years.

“Do people feel like their country is broken? No. They feel like their institutions are broken and they’ve lost their sense of unity,” said Darrell Bricker, CEO of Ipsos public affairs at Global News.

In 35 years of experience in the field, this is the “worst result” he has seen, he added.

Among the citizens who disagree with these comments, those who live in Quebec are among them (39%). Seniors and individuals who vote Liberal also tend to be included in this category.

This survey took into account the opinions of 1,001 Canadians aged 18 and over. In collaboration with Global Newsit was produced from June 12 to 14, 2024.
