A strike to oppose the drop in agents’ income. In the Baie de Somme urban community, garbage collectors are on strike to denounce their drop in income. No household waste collection will be done until at least Tuesday, in Abbeville, Saint-Valery-sur-Somme and surrounding areas.

An “outlaw” arrangement to increase agents’ salaries

The agents denounce the elimination of increased night hours and overtime, permitted by the former management to compensate for the agents’ loss of purchasing power. Since 2008, management has been paying illegally for hours worked from 5 a.m. to 6 a.m., during night hours, in addition to overtime for missions carried out at the recycling center on weekends.

“We were criticized by the Court of Auditors for loss-making management” explains Robert Debray, delegate in charge of waste management at the Baie de Somme urban community. This recent elimination causes a drop of 150 euros to 300 euros net per month on average for employees.

Management wanted to negotiate later in July, but no question for the strikers, the opportunity was perfect with the Olympic torch relay, passing through Abbeville and Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, on July 4. The unionists will be received by the city on Monday to negotiate. The Abbeville recycling center will be blocked all weekend.
