In Tarn-et-Garonne, a legal case is shaking the Emmaüs association. The director and his deputy are being charged with “undeclared work” to the detriment of vulnerable people, the Montauban public prosecutor’s office announced on Thursday, June 27. This decision follows searches carried out on June 4 at four of the association’s sites in Montauban, Castelsarrasin, Grisolles and La Ville-Dieu-du-Temple. They revealed the presence of several people engaged in undeclared work.

Judicial investigation opened for “non-existent or insufficient remuneration”

The public prosecutor of Montauban, Bruno Sauvage, specifies in a press release that a judicial investigation was opened on June 13 to “non-existent or insufficient remuneration for the work of several vulnerable or dependent persons, including at least one minor”“undeclared work” and “breach of trust” for the period from June 2018 to June 2024. On June 20, the director and deputy director of Emmaüs 82 were indicted.

Speaking to AFP, the director’s lawyer, Isabelle Schoenacker-Rossi, said she welcomed the opening of the investigation, because it “gives more rights to the defense.” However, she declined to comment on the substance of the case, citing the confidentiality of the investigation.

The two leaders of Emmaüs in Tarn-et-Garonne implicated in another affair

It should be recalled that the director of Emmaüs in Tarn-et-Garonne and his deputy have already appeared before the court in November 2023. IThey are suspected of embezzlement after the disappearance of 57,000 euros from the association’s accounts over a period from 2017 to 2023. Although they were acquitted by the Montauban court on January 16, they will be retried since the public prosecutor has appealed the judgment.
