It is one of the symbols of Grenoble and a historical monument. Since 1924, the Perret Tower has dominated the capital of the Alps. Renovation work has been underway since autumn 2023. It is expected to last until 2025.
Renovated elevator cabins, consolidated foundations
It was during the first part of the work that the elevator cabins of the Perret Tower were dismantled and then sent to Switzerland, to Bern, to be renovated by a specialized company. As soon as they reopen to the public, they will once again be equipped with glass walls, “as in 1925,” the City specifies.
To prevent the building from moving too much, the builders decided to consolidate its foundations by pouring no less than 40 concrete columns, in order to stabilize the Tower.
A 50-meter-high scaffolding
In order to carry out the work in the best possible conditions, the assembly of scaffolding was necessary. Although initially, the one surrounding the Perret Tower is “only” 18 meters high, it will be raised to reach the terrace of the building which is almost 50 meters high. By the end of the summer, it will even reach the top of the Tower.
The 8 pillars of the Tower destroyed to be better rebuilt
Still with the aim of consolidating the building, the bases of the Perret Tower were restored. A specialized company intervened on all 8 pillars. The latter were thus completely purged of their old concrete and their old reinforcements and renovated.
Work is expected to continue until 2025.
