The events took place this Sunday June 23, 2024. A 79-year-old man was returning home after leaving his apartment, located on Cours Gambetta, Montpellier, to his brother for a few days. The latter had put the keys in the mailbox when leaving. However, when he tried to retrieve them, they had disappeared. Going up to his apartment, he found that several items had been stolen.

He then called his daughter, and together they began to take inventory of the missing items. That’s when they heard the door lock turn and a woman entered the apartment. A discussion began to try to understand why she was there and how she had managed to get the keys. A friend of the victim came to join the conversation, which then moved to the lobby of the building.

Bites and ammonia

The tone then rose. The woman having provided no convincing explanation, the owner therefore called police help. When she heard this, she tried to run away. During the altercation, she bit the victim’s friend twice, then grabbed a bottle of ammonia which she threw at the elderly man, his friend and his daughter. Ammonia, a chemical that is extremely corrosive to the skin, eyes and lungs when concentrated, severely burned the old man’s eyes, putting his eyesight at risk. He was hospitalized.

The woman, aged 49, managed to escape but was arrested the next day in Parc de la Guirlande, in the neighboring district of Figuerolles. She was taken into custody and referred this Wednesday June 26 for the opening of a judicial investigation, before being incarcerated in the Nîmes remand center.
