Phytoplankton is a natural element of the marine ecosystem. Some phytoplankton are capable of temporarily producing toxins which can accumulate in shellfish which then become toxic to humans. This contamination varies depending on the species of shellfish.
The results of the sampling of gastropods, oysters and mussels carried out on Monday June 24, 2024, as part of the REPHYTOX network, in the Thau lagoon, are below the regulatory threshold.
Consequently, the prefect of Hérault decided today to authorize fishing and marketing for human consumption of gastropods from the Etang de Thau.
Restrictions on mussels maintained awaiting a second favorable result ; the sample will be taken at the beginning of next week. In the absence of results on clams, this species is also concerned as a precautionary measure.
As a reminder, oysters are not affected by this contamination and can be consumed without restriction.

People who have consumed mussels, clams or gastropods from these areas caught after June 17 and presenting digestive disorders (vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, etc.) associated with persistent headaches or dizziness are invited to contact their doctor.
It is recalled that cooking does not destroy the toxins brought by phytoplankton (microscopic plants). Even after cooking, shellfish remain unfit for consumption. People who have these products are asked not to consume them.
