The Sainte-Croix church gets a makeover

After restoration work which lasted several years, the former Sainte-Croix church now houses an auditorium.

The date of June 26, 2024 will count in the history of the old Sainte-Croix church, a Catholic religious building which is the historic parish of the medina of Tunis.

Undertaken with the support of the Italian Embassy and the Italian cooperation services, the restoration work included the neighboring presbytery, which has become functional since 2017 and now hosts a cultural center.

The church itself has been extensively restored and now enriches the municipal cultural heritage.

It was in the presence of His Excellency Alessandro Prunas, Italian Ambassador, and executives from the City of Tunis that the old church hosted yesterday its first concert as part of the “In Situ – Tunisi” event, on festival of Italian creativity in Tunisia.

For the record, the Sainte-Croix church has a long history. After hosting the Trinitarian hospital in the sixteenth century, the building became the first Catholic parish in the medina of Tunis.

In 1964, during the establishment of Modus vivendi between the Tunisian government and the Vatican authorities, the Sainte-Croix church was deconsecrated and transferred to the heritage of the City of Tunis.

The building will then house municipal services before closing in order to be restored and have a cultural destination.
