Composed during the latter part of Handel’s life, the oratorio Solomon is one of the most accomplished, combining an almost ideal balance between tunes and choruses, an exceptional melodic invention which gives us unforgettable lyrical numbers like the characters they depict with splendor, and an admirable consistency of the choral pieces. From a tangle of stories around Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, Handel draws strongly contrasting musical landscapes, and obtains a masterpiece.
Paul McCreesh has dedicated himself for four decades to giving Handel quasi-stage evidence: it is for Versailles that he returns Solomonafter having already performed it successfully in 2010, and certain to once again transport listeners into a powerful, shimmering fresco of burning emotion.
