René Léonian’s energy, training capacity and desire to serve left an impression on his fellow citizens. Pastor of the Armenian Evangelical Church of France, his determination to favor what unites rather than what divides, particularly on a religious level, has made him an open pastor, invested in education and integration.

Commitment to serving youth and the community

In Issy-les-Moulineaux, René Léonian distinguished himself in particular by his commitment during the earthquake which struck Armenia in 1988. With the Armenian diaspora of Issy, supported by André Santini, he initiated a chain of remarkable humanitarian solidarity. These efforts led to the twinning of Issy-les-Moulineaux with the Armenian town of Etchmiadzine in 1989, marking the beginning of a close and lasting relationship between the two towns.

In 1994, René Léonian and his wife moved to newly independent Armenia, where they devoted 17 years to helping rebuild the country. Its role has been multifaceted, ranging from the restructuring of the clergy to the creation of educational and cultural centers, including the fight against poverty.

Back in France, he continued his commitment, notably through the Union of Armenian Evangelical Churches of Eurasia and the NGO Portes Ouvertes, defending the cause of persecuted Christians around the world.

The presentation of the Legion of Honor to René Léonian is a tribute not only to his personal achievements but also to his commitment to humanity and fraternity. This distinction also symbolizes the unwavering bond between France and Armenia, strengthened by the tireless actions of René Léonian to promote dialogue, understanding and solidarity between peoples.

Issy-les-Moulineaux, the city of his heart, remains a living testimony of his commitment to his fellow citizens, embodying the spirit of service and dedication that guided his entire life.
