The OFSP has just released its bulletin which reveals the irradiation values of many solariums which exceed the authorized threshold.

In one in three solariums in Switzerland, UV radiation is too high. According to a measurement campaign, this proportion even exceeds 50% in self-service solariums, subject to stricter regulations.

The measures published on Monday in the bulletin of the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) were carried out in 2022 and 2023 by 17 cantonal execution bodies. Results: 31% of the approximately 390 solariums measured exceeded the total irradiation value of 0.3 watts per square meter at at least one measurement point, for example on the back, on the stomach or on the face.

Self-service solariums

Self-service solariums, such as those found in fitness centers or hotels, must comply with a limit value of 0.15 watts per square meter for UV-A and UV-B radiation. This value was exceeded in 59% of cases.

After a few adjustments to the devices (tube replacement, software settings, etc.), 65% of them, during monitoring measurements on 81 installations, met the authorized limit values: compliant operation is therefore possible, underlines the OFSP.

The limit values have been in force since 2019, because strong ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause cancer and other health problems, as the FOPH writes. These measures must be repeated in 2025 and 2026. (sda/ats)
