It’s not yet the first big weekend to go on vacation, but the car remains the preferred means of transport for vacationers, according to an Ifop study for Roole, the leading automobile club in France. Freedom and purchasing power are the main reasons for this choice with an average budget of almost 300 euros.

According to an Ifop study for Roole, the leading automobile club in France with 1,400,000 members, the car remains the preferred means of transport for vacationers. Taking into account gasoline, tolls and parking, with some disparities, we arrive at a budget between 275 and 400 euros.

“They are forced to adapt”

For more than 75% of French people who go on vacation, it will therefore be the car and it is above all an economic choice. “If we compare between taking train tickets for four people or the plane, depending on where we are going, straight away it is obviously much cheaper. The French find themselves in a manage, with inflation and this problem of purchasing power, they are forced to adapt”, explains Alieth d’Assignies, impact director of the Roole automobile club.

Adapting to spend less means, for example, preparing a picnic for a break at a motorway service station, which 55% of those surveyed do. It can also be eco-driving to save fuel at 47%. The journey will be made, eight times out of ten, with the car that we own. And then the road is also a pleasure for many holidaymakers.

“The car allows a certain form of freedom. The opportunity to visit the surroundings of the holiday destination and to move around easily. And then, discover the roads of France since that is also part of the pleasure of the holidays”, Alieth d’Assignies tells Europe 1. A pleasure, even if the journey will be a little longer for the 25% of French people who prefer to avoid motorways.
