Thursday June 20, around 11:30 p.m., the Vaud police were informed that a pyrotechnic device had exploded at rue de Lausanne 43, in Payerne (VD), this at the end of the Euro match between Spain and Italy. During the festivities at the end of the match, a 19-year-old man, a Swiss national, residing in the region, was seriously injured in an upper limb and a leg, by a homemade machine that he had -even used.

It was first a passer-by who provided him with first aid, assisted by first-responder police officers. Subsequently, the paramedics took care of the person bound for Payerne hospital and then they were airlifted to the CHUV. Given the nature of his injuries, his life is in danger. No other person was injured during the incident.

A criminal investigation has been opened under the direction of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which aims to determine the circumstances and causes of this event. The investigations will be carried out by security police inspectors, in collaboration with the forensic brigade.

The cantonal police reminds, under the Federal Law on Explosive Substances (LExpl), that pyrotechnic devices are used for entertainment purposes in defined areas and periods. In addition, as part of the Euro football post-match festivities, everyone must show respect in order to limit the dangers for others and noise pollution.
