Dakar, June 19 (APS) – Senegal will experience growth estimated at 10.1% in 2025 and a reduction in inflation of 2%, the head of a mission from the International Monetary Fund, Edouard Gemayel, said on Wednesday. .

“For 2025, growth projections are above 10%, and inflation will continue to fall to almost 2%,” he said.

Edouard Gemayel spoke to the press during the presentation of the 2e review of the economic reform program of the government of Senegal supported by the IMF.

According to him, growth projections for 2024 are maintained at 7.1%, representing a drop compared to the 8.3% which was initially forecast.

“We will be at 4.8% this year,” he said, “in terms of non-hydrocarbon growth.”

He announced that inflation would continue to fall from 4% to 3.9%.

“If we put these figures into perspective by comparing them to the average in sub-Saharan Africa, for 2024, the average is around 3.8% while Senegal is at 7.1%,” declared Edouard Gemayel.

According to the IMF official, “for 2025, the average sub-Saharan growth is 4% while Senegal is above 10%”.

Likewise, he said, “for inflation in 2024 and 2025, the sub-Saharan average is above 10% while Senegal will be at 3.9% this year and 2% next year”.

“For 2025, we think the deficit should be 3% of GDP in order to create a fiscal cushion to have room in the event of another crisis,” he said.

Regarding fiscal policy, this year’s deficit, which was initially estimated at 3.9%, will be 4.6% of GDP.

According to Mr. Gemayel, this situation is particularly due to three factors: “the payment of debt service interests, the increased allocation for energy subsidies due to the absence of political actions and the unpaid bonds from previous years , as well as the impact of the growth of a value which was revised slightly downwards”.
