Acciona secures new financing for the construction of the Casablanca seawater desalination plant. The Spanish bank CaixaBank and the Spanish Development Finance Company (COFIDES), under the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Trade and Business, have just granted the group two loans of 31 million euros each, an amount total of 62 million euros. Present in Morocco since 2009, CaixaBank has three offices in Casablanca, Tangier and Agadir.

“VSThis project, in which Acciona is participating, will help combat water shortages and the effects of climate change. It is therefore very rewarding to support the company in this operation.“, declared the general director of the investment department of COFIDES, Miguel Angel Ladero, specifying that “Morocco is a country of great strategic importance which offers multiple opportunities for investments“.

An investment of 6.5 billion dirhams

This new financing is in addition to the loan of 250 million euros approved last January by the Spanish government for the benefit of a subsidiary of Acciona, in order to finance the design, construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance of the future seawater desalination station in Casablanca. Or a total budget of 312 million euros for the Spanish group.

The future Casablanca station will be developed by the consortium made up of Acciona, Green of Africa and Afriquia Gaz, for a total investment of 6.5 billion dirhams. It will be operated through a 30-year concession, as part of a public-private partnership with the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE).

The plant, whose work was officially launched on June 10 by Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, will be able to treat, from the end of 2026, up to 548,000 m3 of water per day, capacity expandable to 822,000 m3 per day at from mid-2028. This production will help meet the strong demand in the towns of Settat, Berrechid, Bir Jdid and surrounding regions.
