During the first week of June, a fire broke out in the mental health center of the Cayenne Hospital Center causing significant injuries to a patient while he was in his room. The victim, aged 56 according to our information, was the subject of a medical evacuation.

During the weekend of June 8 to 9, a video in which we see fire residue on a hospital bed circulated on Guyanese social networks. Without confirming to us that the video in question was filmed within the Cayenne Hospital Center, “we confirm that a fire caused significant injuries to a patient hospitalized at the Mental Health Center“, answers the management.

It is here that a fire broke out at the CHC, causing serious injuries to a 56-year-old patient.

According to an internal source, the images were indeed taken within the André Rosemon Hospital Center. Furthermore, the patient would be burned 50% of the right side, which corresponds to the side of the bed most burned on the recording. This source specifies that the incident occurred within the Wapa unit, in psychiatry.

The patient, a 56-year-old man, was medically evacuated. According to management, “the first elements tend to show that the alarm and fire safety devices worked correctly”. It is currently unknown what could have started the fire. A thorough investigation will be carried out to understand the causes.

Despite our numerous requests, the management of the Cayenne hospital did not wish to authenticate the video, nor respond to our requests for intervention.
