In a statement that risks sparking heated debates within the Senegalese political sphere, journalist and analyst Madiambal Diagne severely criticized Macky Sall’s intention to run in the 2024 legislative elections. According to him, this approach constitutes an error strategy of the former head of state, who nevertheless led Senegal for 12 years.
“If he was there for 12 years and he could not have a leader capable of replacing him at the APR, it is because he failed,” launched Madiambal Diagne, pointing out an absence of clear succession within the Alliance for the Republic (APR). For the analyst, this inability to prepare a solid succession is a sign of failure for Macky Sall, who had the possibility, during his successive mandates, to train a new generation of leaders capable of carrying his party.

The journalist also underlined the unprecedented nature of the situation, recalling that “No former president has done this”, referring to the idea that no former Senegalese head of state has sought to return to the front of the political scene through a legislative candidacy after leaving power. Diagne also believes that the disenchantment between Macky Sall and part of the electorate, exacerbated during the recent elections, will not be able to fade so quickly.
Another sensitive point raised by Madiambal Diagne is the possibility of a confrontation between Macky Sall and his own brother, Aliou Sall. “It would be inelegant to confront Aliou Sall on the political ground,” he warned, alluding to the potential tensions that such a situation could generate within the Sall family, but also in public opinion. .
