Two people are missing, including a 6-year-old girl, after a landslide which swept away a river port in the Brazilian Amazon, local authorities announced Tuesday.

The landslide took place on Monday, on the banks of the Solimoes, one of the main tributaries of the Amazon.

It completely destroyed a river port used by boats transporting goods and passengers in the town of Manacapuru, about 100 km from Manaus, the main Amazonian metropolis, in northern Brazil.

Emergency services are looking for a six-year-old girl and a 36-year-old man, according to the Civil Defense of the state of Amazonas, of which Manaus is the capital.

Ten people were injured and two of them are still hospitalized, the same source said.

Impressive images shot by an AFP videographer show that the landslide dug a huge crater on the bank of the river.

Local authorities explained that this phenomenon is due to erosion favored by the extreme drought currently affecting the Amazon, which experts attribute in particular to climate change.
