More than 20 years after the launch of the renovation project, the Annecy Fire and Rescue Center, also known as the “Roman barracks” will finally be rebuilt. The project was presented on Tuesday, September 17 by the project stakeholders.

After 20 years of discussions and following the free cessation of the land by the City of Annecy last May, the renovation project for the largest barracks in Haute-Savoie has finally been relaunched.

Built in 1958, this barracks had become obsolete. However, its location in the hypercentre of Annecy makes it a particularly strategic and active barracks. More than 8,000 interventions leave from there each year, which represents no less than 15% of interventions in the department. It therefore became necessary to modernize this building to maintain an increased presence of firefighters in the city centre.

A gymnasium and 17 additional accommodations

On Tuesday, September 17, the Ferrand-Sigal architectural firm presented the plan for the future barracks at a press conference. The vast project, worth 31 million, was designed to meet the functional needs of the firefighters, while respecting the environment and integrating into the urban landscape.

17 housing units and a gymnasium will also be created to enhance the attractiveness of the barracks. Work will begin in 2026 and last two years. During this time, the 130 firefighters will move to the former Peugeot garage in Annecy-le-Vieux.

On his X account, the mayor of Annecy, François Astorg, welcomed this project which allows a barracks to be kept in the city centre, while protecting the inhabitants and the architectural heritage.
