Switzerland must not join the G7 REPO working group, responsible for tracking down Russian assets. The National Council refused on Wednesday by 101 votes to 80 a proposal from the Greens to this effect.

Switzerland does not have a formal working group for the implementation of international economic sanctions against Russia. As a manager of Russian assets and the main place for trading in raw materials, Switzerland nevertheless bears a great responsibility in this area. Membership would send a clear political signal, according to Franziska Ryser (Vert-es/SG).

Switzerland already collaborates with REPO on a technical level. But this working group is a political instrument of the G7. American pressure to resume all their sanctions will be enormous, countered Hans-Peter Portmann (PLR/ZH). Switzerland must not allow itself to be carried away, because it will be fundamentally weakened in its role of mediation and good offices.

The Federal Council was also opposed.
