The German group Axel Springer, publisher of the tabloid Bild, announced on Monday that it was deepening its partnership with the software publisher Microsoft in artificial intelligence, by being paid for the provision of content.

This partnership stipulates in particular that “Axel Springer will work with Microsoft to test innovative ‘chat’ experiences based on AI in which users can be informed and interact with Axel Springer’s journalistic content”, according to a press release.

This provision of content for Microsoft products will provide financial remuneration to Axel Springer, which is not specified in the press release.

Additionally, existing collaboration on AI projects such as AI assistant Hey_, powered by Azure OpenAI cloud services, will be expanded.

“This next generation of AI is transforming almost every aspect of work and life, including how people search for and consume content online,” commented Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft.

These AI partnerships ‘are crucial to preserving and promoting independent journalism and a thriving media landscape,’ said Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Axel Springer.

The collaboration between Microsoft and Axel Springer has existed for more than 15 years and began with access to content from the daily Die Welt, before being expanded to other titles such as Business Insider and Politico, and now the daily’s online site popular Bild.

This is the second major partnership concluded by Axel Springer in artificial intelligence, after that announced in December with OpenAI, the Californian creator of ChatGPT, which will pay him to provide summaries of articles from the media group in response to user queries.
