The big cinema mass and first awards ceremony of the year takes place on Sunday January 5. Because, for the second post-scandal year, the organization of the Golden Globes is banking on a unifying event, free from any controversy. Here are the clashes to watch…
Best Actress, Drama
Those responsible for the awards evening made sure to nominate actresses likely to attract both the general public and discerning movie buffs. Angelina Jolie, for the excellent film Maria, by Pablo Larrain, is the big favorite, the actress portraying with accuracy and conviction the last weeks of the life of the diva Maria Callas. The second favorite is the Brazilian Fernanda Torres, whose performance in I’m Still Here was awarded at Cannes last May. Tilda Swinton for The room next doorKate Winslet pour Lee and Pamela Anderson for The Last Showgirl could create a surprise. As for Nicole Kidman, the buzz around Babygirlany more than his game, is not enough to justify a statuette.

Best Actress, Comedy or Musical
This category allows organizers to continue to cast a wide net, while seeking box office success. Because it’s obviously Cynthia Erivo, impeccable Elphaba in Wickedby Jon M. Chu, who is in the leading position. But she is closely followed by Mikey Madison for Anorain her role as a sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch, written especially for her by director Sean Baker… especially since the feature film won the Palme d’Or at Cannes. In roles as crazy as they are surprising, Amy Adams for Nightbitch and Demi Moore for La substance come far behind in the predictions. And, despite all their talent, neither Zendaya, who bursts the screen in Challengersby Karla Sofia Gascon, for the Emilia Perez by Jacques Audiard, should not leave with the statuette.

Best Actor, Drama
Among the men, the five nominees have a significant chance of being crowned, even if Adrien Brody, for The Brutalistleaves with a short head start, for his performance as a Holocaust survivor architect held under the thumb of a patron (Guy Pearce nominated in the supporting role category). Obviously, Timothée Chalamet, excellent as Bob Dylan at the start of his career in A complete strangercould charm voters, just like Daniel Craig, unforgettable as a gay man in Mexico in the 1950s in Queer. If the panel of Golden Globes voters want to get involved in politics, the statuette could go to Colman Domingo for his role as an inmate who puts on a play in Sing Sing or to Sebastian Stan, as the detestable and larger-than-life Trump in The apprentice. And Ralph Fiennes’ performance as a cardinal in charge of electing a new pope who finds himself in the middle of a power struggle could also win the ultimate prize.

Best Actor, Comedy or Musical
Unusually, Sebastian Stan is also nominated in this category for his role in A different man. But he risks not being a match for Jesse Eisenberg, perfect in A Real Paina bittersweet comedy that he directed and in which he plays opposite Kieran Culkin whose absence in the nominations we can only deplore. Glen Powell for efficiency HitmanGabriel LaBelle for the agreed Saturday NightHugh Grant pour Heretic and Jesse Plemons for Kinds of Kindness complete this category.

Dune: Part Twoalmost empty-handed
In 2022, the first part of the Dune by Denis Villeneuve had been nominated for three Golden Globes, including those for best film and best direction, but she only left with the statuette for best soundtrack, composed by Hans Zimmer.
This year, the feature film by the local director which stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya was only cited in two categories, “Best film, drama” and “Best soundtrack”, also composed by Hans Zimmer. And, this time, the production of Denis Villeneuve was shunned.
