In 2006, when they had been a couple for several years, Kate and William were living a long-distance relationship, the Prince being engaged in his military obligations and Kate dividing her time between work and family. However, the end-of-year holidays were a perfect time to get together, as royal author Katie Nicholl explains in her book, The Making of a Royal Romance. While the couple had planned to spend Christmas separately as they usually did, they were supposed to meet up for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Eve. A promise which was ultimately not kept.

This New Year that upset Kate Middleton
For Kate Middleton, New Year 2006 was supposed to be a special opportunity to spend time with William, away from outside pressures. The prince would have promised to celebrate this important date in his company, offering the future princess the opportunity to share with him the festive traditions that she cherishes so much. However, at the last minute, William changed his plans and decided to stay with his own royal family, leaving Kate disappointed, worried and above all alone for this New Year’s Eve. A choice that the Princess of Wales learned the day after Christmas by telephone.

Used to showing an image of serenity and patience, she could not hide her sadness at this broken promise: “William had doubts and sat down with his father and grandmother to have a frank discussion about his future with Kate.
