Beverly Hills chic. On Sunday, the 82nd edition of the Golden Globes, which will be held in Beverly Hills (United States), will be closely scrutinized by millions of film and television fans around the world. In France, eyes will mainly be focused on Emilia Perez, by Jacques Audiard. 20 Minutes reviews what awaits you during this ceremony, which will be broadcast on Canal+ on the night of Sunday to Monday.
Red carpet at “Emilia Perez”
French filmmaker Jacques Audiard’s musical odyssey about the gender transition of a Mexican drug trafficker, Emilia Perezhas no less than ten nominations, notably in the category of best comedy, best director, best actress for Karla Sofía Gascon in the title role, best supporting actress for Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez, and best screenplay.
With a record number of nominations for a musical, this film awarded at Cannes and broadcast by Netflix is a big favorite at the Golden Globes. Its harvest will give an indication of its potential for the Oscars, which will take place in March.
The main competitor to Emilia Perez for the best comedy prize remains the Palme d’Or Anorawhere Sean Baker chronicles the setbacks of a young prostitute from Brooklyn, portrayed as a modern Cinderella. Holiday commercial cardboard, Wicked has only four nominations. But its star Cynthia Erivo, who plays the witch from The Wizard of Oz opposite singer Ariana Grande in this adaptation of a Broadway musical, could steal the show from transgender actress Karla Sofía Gascon.
“Less predictable”
Another French film, The Substanceis one of the outsiders. This horrific fable by Coralie Fargeat, where Demi Moore plays a former Hollywood glory addicted to a youth serum, has five nominations, notably in the categories of best comedy, best direction and best actress.
Still marked by the vast scandal revealed in 2021 on the ethical failings, racism and corruption of their members, the Golden Globes have largely reformed in recent years. In particular, they added more than two hundred members from the four corners of the globe to their jury. A change which is felt in the nominations, according to Pete Hammond, of the specialized site Deadline. The ceremony is “less predictable” and “definitely more international”.
The drama categories, traditionally separated from comedies by the Golden Globes, also reflect this evolution. The Canadian film The Brutalista portrait of a Holocaust survivor architect trying to rebuild his life in the United States, received seven nominations. It is aiming for the prize for best dramatic film, but will notably have to get rid of the papal thriller Conclavenominated in six categories.
Fierce competition among actresses
The stars of both films, Adrien Brody and Ralph Fiennes, face off for best actor in a drama film. A race in which Timothée Chalamet could be invited, for his remarkable incarnation of Bob Dylan in A complete stranger.
But this year, it is on the fate of actresses that the Golden Globes are most likely to weigh, three days before the close of voting for Oscar nominations. Already fierce on the comedy side, the competition is just as fierce on the drama side.
