Zurich (awp) – The manufacturer of solar modules and panels Meyer Burger has started its production of solar panels in the United States, after having refocused its activities across the Atlantic. The Bernese group won a first order.

The Goodyear plant in Arizona began with the manufacturing of solar modules, carried out in parallel with the German Thalheim site which produces photovoltaic cells. The latter will continue to run until the factory in Colorado Springs, Colorado, takes over, the company detailed Tuesday in a press release.

Meyer Burger has also signed a collaboration agreement with an unidentified American partner. The latter will invest in the Swiss company, which will produce solar modules with American components.

A “major” American energy group will also acquire from January 2026, over a period of three years or more, solar modules produced in Goodyear with an annual capacity of up to 600 megawatts.

Meyer Burger, in financial difficulties, is also in the process of concluding a financing agreement with an American bank and should receive the necessary funds “in the middle of the third quarter”. The company must also obtain financing for its export activities from a German establishment.

In February, the group announced the closure of a production site in Germany and its refocusing on the United States. The production site in Freiberg in Saxony was closed in April due to low profitability and low-cost imports from China.
