When a seizure saves a patient’s life

It is December 2022 when emergency physician Florent Maillet receives a young patient aged 23. The latter has been suffering from a fever and persistent cough for some time. Nothing worrying so far, because during this period, a triple epidemic is hitting France: Flu, Covid-19 and Bronchiolitis… However, a third symptom will attract the attention of the health professional: confusion disorders…

Several avenues are then mentioned by the emergency physician and his students. A series of examinations were then carried out, but no diagnosis was established… As a precaution, the young man was kept in the emergency room. The night passes, when suddenly, in the early morning, without explanation, he begins to convulse. Immediately transferred to intensive care, additional examinations were prescribed again…

To stop the patient’s convulsion, the intensive care unit gave him corticosteroids. These drugs quickly reduce inflammation and calm the immune system. “It could have ended badly and led to death if the patient had not been taken care of at the time of his convulsion,” Dr. Maillet told Sara Kemacha. His condition is stabilizing, but the young boy’s family is distraught… How can you have a seizure at 23 years old, with no medical history? The diagnosis will be made a few days later…
