Fears and phobias, shiver in this special issue of Ça Papille

Do your hairs stand up at the sight of a hairy spider? A fear of blood? Scares in the dark? Discovery of what a phobia is in this new issue of Ça Papille.

Fear is a feeling that we have all felt before. Sometimes we like to have the chips, other times, these fears are real phobias.

Doctor Denis Jacques, head of the psychosomatic department at the UCL Namur University Hospital in Godinne, explains to us what is really going on in our heads when we have shocks. And if you are one of the thrill-seekers, our student reporter Gabin Léonard has put together a program of bloody events for this weekend.

Did you know? : Fear is a good feeling

It may be surprising, but it’s true! The feeling of fear is essential to our survival, explains Doctor Denis Jacques.

There is a proverb that says that fear is a good advisor. The primary function of fear is not to feel, but to act. Our brain processes olfactory data and sensations and triggers automatic behaviors such as flight. For example, I smell burning, it’s instinctive, it’s not a decision process. We are therefore on alert because we identify a fire and therefore we flee. This fear therefore allows the individual to avoid what will endanger their biological balance.

Fear for entertainment

During this Halloween period, some people love scary films or even visits to haunted castles. But why do we like to scare ourselves, Doctor?

When we play at scaring ourselves, we know that it is “fake” as the children would say. There is a notion of controlling what happens to us, it’s a way of taming fear! We can therefore easily appreciate this fear that we feel in front of a film.

Gabin’s program for a deadly weekend

Our student reporter Gabin Léonard also enjoyed being scared at Spontin Castle last weekend during a special Halloween event. Discover a compilation of the biggest scares in his short video.

If you want more, Gabin has listed a series of spooky upcoming events.

  • “The fantastic Halloween” at the Château de Lavaux-Sainte-Anne until November 3.
  • “The walking dead dinner” at Château de Spontin on November 2
  • “The Family Halloween” at Château de Vêves on November 2

If you prefer to organize your own party, no problem, Gabin gives us her essentials for a successful Halloween in the rest of the show.
