SLIDESHOW – Many sporting figures have retired in 2024. A retrospective in images of certain legends of their disciplines with a well-filled list of achievements.
Due to the 2024 Paris Olympics, many sporting legends have taken on a final challenge before ending their careers. This is particularly the case of the French handball players Vincent Gerard, Nikola and Lucas Karabatic, the Danish Mikkel Hansen but also the big names of the Olympics, Emma McKeon (the most successful Australian swimmer of all time) and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in athletics . Same thing for the Scottish Andy Murray. The only tennis player to be crowned two-time Olympic champion in singles, he settled for doubles with his compatriot Dan Evans to end his great career disrupted by recurring hip pain.
Like Murray, several have followed their bodies, like the Frenchman Christophe Lemaitre. If he dreamed of hanging up in Paris in front of his audience, the sprinter (first white athlete to go below 10 seconds) was unable to deal with yet another injury and preferred to stop. Ditto for Racing 92 rugby player Wenceslas Lauret who hastened his retirement due to repeated concussions. And how can we not mention Rafael Nadal, winner of 22 Grand Slams including 14 Roland-Garros.
