Tupperware has launched bankruptcy proceedings: employees at the factory in Aalst were informed about their future on Wednesday

The American manufacturer of Tupperware has launched bankruptcy proceedings, the company announced in a statement. It is looking for a buyer.

The employees of the American manufacturer of plastic food containers Tupperware will receive information on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. about the future of the factory and logistics center in Aalst. During an extraordinary works council, a video recorded at the company’s headquarters in Orlando will be broadcast.

Tupperware employs more than 240 people at the production plant in Aalst. Tupperware General Services, which includes research and development as well as other services, also employs 44 additional workers. These are mainly employees and managers. The American manufacturer, which has been in difficulty for years, announced on Wednesday that it had launched bankruptcy proceedings. Tupperware has been burdened for several years by several hundred million dollars of debt and had already had to restructure its financial commitments for the first time, in 2020.

Last week, production in Aalst was reduced to an absolute minimum. A large part of the staff no longer goes to the factory and is on temporary unemployment. The local management is said to have received a bridging loan to continue certain operations, but the new production has reportedly not started.

Launched in 1946, Tupperware had become a social phenomenon, entering millions of American homes and beyond through the efficiency of its network of representatives.
