(Val-d’Oise) welcomed Hopare, whose real name is Alexandre Monteiro, who has become an emblematic figure of urban art, for the creation of a new monumental fresco. The city, the cradle of Impressionism, has included this project in the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of Impressionism, in 2024.

At the beginning of the year, the City, in partnership with the social landlord Toit & Joie-Poste Habitat, launched a call for projects from artists or artists’ collectives to create a mural artwork in Argenteuil. Hopare was selected to implement this project. Known for its inclusive relationship with the public, Hopare chose to fully involve residents in the creative process.

Moments of unique encounters took place in order to share impressions, memories and dreams.

Production began on August 29, 2024. The work is now the artist’s most impressive to date in .

It covers the monumental 317 m² gable of the Toit et Joie – Poste Habitat – residence located at 98 avenue Maurice Utrillo.

The social landlord, owner of this 6-storey residence, has partnered with the City to create this exceptional work. The partnership is part of a cultural mediation project, access to culture and the integration of the building’s residents into the city’s projects.

“It also responds to the 1 building, 1 work of art scheme of the Ministry of Culture, whose shared objective is to install art on walls, as close as possible to the public, to support the creation and dissemination of visual arts,” underlines the town hall of Argenteuil.

This fresco is the 30th work produced as part of the “open-air museum” system deployed in the city since 2020.

In just ten years, Alexandre Monteiro, known as Hopare, has become an emblematic figure of urban art. An artist of the moment, like his role model Jean-Michel Basquiat, he most often creates his works in freestyle. Each project is a way of developing his own aesthetic and natural vocabulary. A globetrotter, the 35-year-old artist creates his art like a travel diary where each piece refers to a particular encounter, place or event. Each of his works is a way of serving humanity and transporting the viewer. Freedom is the meaning he gives to his life and his journey. Powerful works that conquer collectors and art lovers around the world. Football star Kylian Mbappé bought a work by Hopare for €520,000 at the PSG charity gala auction on May 16, 2024
