The Polish media nicknamed him « Godzilla »so impressive is the stature of Bogdan Swieczkowski, the new president of the Polish Constitutional Court. Since his appointment by President Andrzej Duda, close to the national-conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, this jurist, who took office on December 9, has increased his media appearances while the institution seems to have reached the paroxysm of the crisis that has shaken it since 2015, while Poland took over the presidency of the Council of the European Union on 1is January 2025.
Since the defeat of PiS in the legislative elections of October 2023 and the coming to power of center-right Prime Minister Donald Tusk, the Constitutional Court is one of the last bastions of the national conservatives. Two of them are considered illegitimate because they occupy the place of former judges whom President Duda had refused to swear in. On the PiS side, it is argued that the liberals of the Civic Platform, the party of Donald Tusk, had already opened the breach, in 2015, while they were still in power: threatened with having to hand over to PiS, they had chosen five judges, two of whom « par anticipation »paying little attention to Polish fundamental law.
