The country’s capital, Washington DC, has put in place its “heat emergency” alert. Several other large cities will be affected this week, from Chicago to New York.

Large areas of the central and eastern United States are bracing for a sweltering heat wave in the coming days, with temperatures expected to be unusually high for June. “Temperatures will soar next week from the Midwest to the Northeast” of the country, warned the National Weather Service (NWS) on “several dozen records” daily heat.

This wave started Sunday in the center and will spread across the Midwest and Northeast this Monday and Tuesday. It will last most of the week, according to the NWS. “Heat is the leading cause of weather-related deaths most years. Take it seriously”, warned the weather service. The latter warned this Monday against the outbreak of probable forest fires, due to the weather.

“Heat emergency”

The capital Washington set up its alert on Friday “the heat emergency”indicated Mayor Muriel Bowser, and “Extreme temperatures are forecast for next week”. The mercury could rise to 38 degrees on June 23.

Several other large cities will be affected, from Chicago to New York. According to scientists, repeated heat waves are an unequivocal marker of global warming and these heat waves are expected to further multiply, lengthen and intensify.
