According to an Ifop survey, 76% of French people will choose to travel by car to their holiday destination this summer, despite the pollution it causes.

“We are attached to the car, we love the car. And I love it.” This heartfelt cry from Emmanuel Macron on the France 2 and TF1 television news in 2023 during an interview on ecology could be echoed by a number of French people – 76% to be exact. Among the citizens who will have the chance to go on vacation, this is the percentage of those who plan to go there by car rather than by train according to a survey carried out by Ifop for the Roole company published this Wednesday, June 26 2024 and cited by Le Figaro.

Being able to visit the surrounding area at their vacation spot is the main reason given by respondents (76%). In second place, the luggage argument: the car allows older people to transport it more easily (60%).

In third place, the budget: 38% believe that the car costs them less than the train or the plane. The vacationers in question still anticipate 300 euros in costs generated by the use of the car during the vacation. Furthermore, half of them plan to travel between 500 and 1,000 kilometers for their outward journey.

So to save money, some of them plan to favor national roads over motorways. The cost is also the reason cited – in addition to the fatigue and stress of the journey – by those who will take the train or the plane.

The survey was conducted among a sample of 2,000 people, representative of the French population aged 18 and over.
