The location of this military concentration is carefully considered and allows China to extend its power and deterrent force over a large area of the South China Sea, which it claims as its territory. Beyond a show of force, the tense situation around Taiwan and the possibility of intervention by the United States have motivated Beijing to develop its military arsenal in the region. “China works very hard to have superiority in this territory that no one else can match. It has acquired the ability to project power with many means — planes, missiles, militias, ships, submarines. We must strengthen our capabilities and our military posture with our allies to prevent a Chinese attack“, explains retired Rear Admiral Michael Studeman, former commander of the Office of Naval Intelligence. Added to this is also the need for China to guarantee the security of the sea lanes that fuel its economy.
