Three countries have announced that they recognize Palestine as a state, but what does this mean in practice?

Madrid, Oslo and Dublin announced on Wednesday that they recognized Palestine as a full state. Bogota has joined the movement and now plans to open an embassy in Ramallah, the de facto capital of the Palestinian Authority. This position did not fail to provoke the ire of the Jewish state which, through its Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, considers that this is “a reward for terrorism”. The United States, more measured, disagrees more with the form than the substance. Joe Biden believes that a Palestinian state must “come into being through direct negotiations between the parties, not through unilateral recognition.”

These announcements constitute a new blow to Israel on the international scene, as the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has just requested an arrest warrant against its Prime Minister and its Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant. But they also raise other, broader questions: on the very notion of what a State is, on the chances of achieving such a status and on the current situation surrounding the recognition of Palestine throughout the world.
