The Metropolitan Council has just approved the co-financing by the Métropole de Lyon of a railway study program, a first step in the deployment of the metropolitan RER.

With a view to preparing for a strengthening of Lyon’s rail offering from 2027, the Métropole de Lyon and its partners have just laid the first milestones for the metropolitan RER, with the approval this Monday, June 24 in the Metropolitan Council of the co-financing of a railway study program by the Metropolis. In a press release, the Metropolis announces the launch of this program, with SYTRAL Mobilités, “to understand all the costs and constraints linked to a reinforcement of 108 trains per day (distributed over all the branches of the Lyon railway star) from 2027”.

“The Metropolis is committed”

The Metropolis specifies that the total cost of these studies amounts to one million euros, which it “commits to co-financing up to 143,500 euros”. This project aims to increase the frequency of TER on the Brignais – Saint-Paul, Givors – Lyon-Perrache, Villefranche-sur-Saône – Lyon-Perrache and Lyon-Perrache – Vienne lines. Currently thirty minutes during peak hours, trains would pass every fifteen minutes, which therefore requires doubling the number of trains.

The program covers three components: the production of a transport plan by the operator SNCF Voyageurs TER AuRA, a safety diagnosis at the level of the 59 level crossings affected by the increased supply, and a measurement of the impact reinforcements of offer on the flow of passengers at the platform and at the station.
