Ethiopian Airlines plans to acquire a stake in Fly Gabon

(Ecofin Agency) – Ethiopian Airlines’ desire for entry into the capital of Fly Gabon comes as Fly Gabon recently unveiled the first plane in its fleet, as a prelude to its inaugural flight announced soon.

Ethiopian Airlines has expressed interest in acquiring a stake in Fly Gabon, the new national air carrier currently being created. This is what Eric Moussavou, Director General of the Gabonese Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) reveals following a working visit by the leaders of the Ethiopian group, which resulted in the signing of a memorandum agreement with the Ethiopian Aviation University (UAE) for the training of flight crew.

“Ethiopian Airlines has expressed its interest in providing its technical expertise, training, maintenance and financial support for the development of Gabonese air transport”he clarified.

Leader in air transport in Africa, Ethiopian Airlines has often positioned itself on projects to create national companies. However, apart from Asky which is a successful case of its investments, the presence of the group in the shareholding has not always led to the success of the projects. His most recent involvement in the creation of a company was the Nigeria Airlines project which ended in failure.

Zambia Airways, another joint venture, has yet to take off since its inception, while Malawian Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines Mozambique suspended operations in 2021, in debt and with lean fleets. As for Tchadia Airlines, it was liquidated in 2022 after 3 years of activity.

The Ethiopian carrier is also currently working with Congolese and Guinean leaders on similar projects.
