The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) has insisted on the registration of refugees to improve decision-making regarding their situation and the effectiveness of humanitarian actions in Africa.

The AU PSC “reiterates its request to the AU Commission to put in place systems for the collection, analysis and management of data and statistics relating to refugees and internally displaced persons for their registration in order to to improve decision-making regarding their situation and the overall effectiveness of humanitarian actions in Africa,” affirmed the Council in a press release published Monday and having sanctioned its meeting, held on June 19 at ministerial level on “refugees, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Humanitarian Aid in Africa”.

This meeting of the PSC confirms, once again, the Council’s commitment to remain seized of humanitarian issues in Africa, in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Protocol relating to the establishment of the Peace and Security Council, in particular article 7 (1p), which mandates it to support and facilitate humanitarian action in situations of armed conflict or serious natural disasters, underlined the Moroccan delegation during this session.

During this meeting, the Moroccan delegation recalled that the active solidarity advocated by HM King Mohammed VI, may God help him, in Africa constitutes the basis of the conduct which structures Morocco’s humanitarian commitment.

Always focused on the African citizen, this commitment is based on an approach integrating the multiple security, humanitarian and ecological challenges weighing on Africa, reaffirmed the Moroccan delegation in particular.

The Moroccan delegation highlighted the actions undertaken by Morocco in supporting refugee registration operations around the world.

As part of sharing the burden and responsibilities, recalled the Moroccan delegation, Morocco made financial contributions aimed at supporting the registration and documentation operations carried out by the UNHCR, following the holding of the 2nd World Forum on refugees in 2023 in Geneva and during the 1st edition of the Forum, where Morocco co-sponsored the theme “Protection capacity”.

Support for registration constitutes, in fact, a key tool for the protection of refugees, a guarantee of the integrity of protection systems and an essential indicator in the evaluation of humanitarian aid intended for refugee populations, reiterated the Moroccan delegation.
