A candidate for municipal elections was assassinated on Friday in the state of Puebla, in central Mexico, less than 48 hours before the general elections in the country, marked by the assassination of more than twenty people who were running for office. local mandates, according to authorities.

Jorge Huerta Cabrera, candidate for a seat on the municipal council of Izucar de Matamoros, a town of around 80,000 inhabitants, was killed and his wife and a colleague injured in the attack, a Source told AFP of the Puebla State Government as well as an official from the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

According to Mexican media, Jorge Huerta Cabrera, 30, was shot several times in broad daylight as he got out of his vehicle.

A total of 25 candidates for local office have been assassinated in Mexico since the start of the electoral campaign, according to the federal government. The non-governmental organization Data Civica counts around thirty of them.

This crime occurred two days before the June 2 elections during which Mexicans will choose their new president as well as more than 20,000 national and local leaders.

Drug cartels and other criminal organizations pressure candidates of all parties in hopes of maintaining their influence after elections. According to the authorities, they also seek to impose their candidates by choosing one and prohibiting others from running under penalty of death.
