the inexorable return of nuclear energy to Europe?

SEEN FROM ELSEWHERE – By categorically refusing the use of nuclear energy, Germany finds itself increasingly isolated within the EU. Today, many countries are extending the life of their reactors or even considering building new ones.

The small Belgian town of Huy is once again attracting the attention of high political circles. Located not far from the center, on the banks of the Meuse, three gray towers rise into the sky, the reactors of the Tihange nuclear power plant. In 2017, after the discovery of several cracks in the concrete, more than 50,000 demonstrators demanded the shutdown of the plant, so much so that one reactor was disconnected from the network shortly after, and another should follow in 2025. However, as the Belgian government recently announced, the third reactor should remain operational until 2035, ten years longer than planned.

A few days ago, environmentalists wrote a letter full of indignation to the European Commission in Brussels, which has yet to decide on the subsidies to be granted to Tihange 3 and could therefore thwart the Belgians’ plans. Protests also took place in Huy.
