The Ghana recently announced the suspension of its diplomatic relations with the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) through an official document addressed to the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This decision represents a significant change in the position of Ghana, which recognized the SADR in 1979.
The Ghanaian government is committed to officially communicating this new position through the appropriate diplomatic channels, particularly with Morocco, the African Union and the United Nations. Ghana also expressed its support for Morocco’s efforts to reach a solution accepted by all parties.
The Sahara question: a major regional issue
The question of Western Sahara remains one of the most complex conflicts on the African continent. This region is at the heart of opposing demands between Morocco, which proposes autonomy under its sovereignty, and Front Polisariowhich calls for self-determination. Despite United Nations mediation efforts and various diplomatic initiatives, tensions persist.
A lasting resolution would require an inclusive dialogue between all parties, taking into account the aspirations of local populations and regional stability issues. This decision of Ghana is part of a broader diplomatic dynamic, with 46 countries, including 13 African, having severed or suspended their relations with the SADR since 2000. This development reflects significant changes in the international perception of this issue.

This repositioning of Ghana could influence other African countries in their approach to the Saharan question and contribute to a new regional dynamic.
