There are more and more inhabitants in Charente-Maritime, the latest figures from INSEE show this. Published at the end of last year, with consolidated data in 2022, we know that there is an increase of around 3.5% with the total population 683,710 inhabitants compared to 660,458 in 2016. The trend is confirmed year after year, with an attractive department, and in detail, areas are clearly gaining inhabitants. In Aunis, this is obvious, particularly for three municipalities:
- Ferrières (+8.9% between 2016 and 2022, 1,459 inhabitants compared to 877)
- Angliers (+4.8% between 2016 and 2022, 1366 inhabitants compared to 1029)
- St Ouen d’Aunis (+4.5% between 2016 and 2022, 2133 inhabitants compared to 1639)
In 2001, there were less than 400 inhabitants, and only 13 students in Angliers.
In Angliers, mayor Didier Taupin has been elected since 2001, “When I arrived, there were less than 400 inhabitants, the anecdote is also for the school. From kindergarten to CM2, we had a total of 13 students, and a single class. We were said she was supposed to close, but with a year’s reprieve, she stayed, and today we have eight classes, and around 190 students. A ninth class should open, perhaps at the start of the next school year.”
Angliers has gained more than 300 inhabitants in six years
Initially Angliers attracted with land and real estate prices a little cheaper than in the La Rochelle conurbation, but over time, today it is not only first-time buyers who settle in Angliers . For Didier Taupin:
“There is still a socio-professional change among new arrivals. A few years ago, we were more likely to be first-time buyers, young couples who arrived without children and who started their family in Angliers. Today, we still have these first-time buyers, but we also have a population arriving from Paris, and other families with children already in middle or high school. There are fewer of us today who say to ourselves when we have accommodation, there is necessarily a child in a school, we are no longer in that ratio.”

Over time, the municipality has been able to structure itself, with services
Angliers today has a minimum to please newcomers. If the bakery is waiting for a buyer, there is for this commune of 1366 inhabitants, a supermarket, a driving school, a hair salon, a pizzeria, a garage and one fuel pump. As for doctors, there are three in a medical center, two physiotherapists have just moved into a municipal building. The town hall is brand new, a multi-purpose room available for parties or weddings.
Soon a pharmacy in Angliers?
With in the future an eco-district which will emerge at the entrance to the town, on the right when coming from the National 11, the mayor hopes in the long term, in addition to housing and houses, to see a pharmacy set up there. “The closest is in Nuaillé d’Aunis, a little over 3.5 kilometers away, the other is in Sainte-Soulle, over 7 kilometers away” A file that is not easy to put together, since in this matter, it is the ARS which has the last word, the regional health agency.
