Murder of the little Catalea – Josian Sylvio Edmond, alias Touloute: Portrait of an executioner
  • A heavy drug past

Described as an executioner by Anouchka, the mother of little Catalea, Josian Sylvio Edmond, known as Touloute, a drug addict, is also known for his violence. A man with a heavy past…

Catalea’s funeral took place at Avenue Chrysanthème, in the Flamboyant district of Petite-Rivière. This 19-month-old girl was brutally thrown to the ground on January 1 by Josian Sylvio Edouard. On this occasion, local residents spoke to Défi Plus. Many of them say they are avoiding the suspect, known for his drug addiction. “When the drug went up in the head, it came after all, it remained in the tank,” they say.

On the other hand, other residents of the neighborhood are stunned. They say they do not understand what could have provoked such an act on the part of the suspect. “Nu kone l’droge tu ou, mais sa model-la zamai nu ti pou panse,” they indicate. Some even describe him as a “cool” person. Others say that he cherished little Catalea, to whom he never refused to play or buy treats. “Souvan li amene zenfan la laboutik ek li aster gato pu li,” confide residents. The latter add: “Anouchka and Josian ti pe rest in mem lakaz kot sa madam-la, akoz zot pa ti ena plas pou dormi”. Unfortunately, the mother could not imagine that her child would meet such an end in the hands of the drug addict.

Josian Sylvio Edmond, on file with the police for drug possession and multiple offenses, was arrested by the Petite-Rivière police during an operation led by Inspector Azor, Sergeant Collet and Constable Genave. For some time he had been wanted for failing to appear in court while he was on trial. An arrest warrant had been issued for him because he had stopped reporting to the local police, as required by the terms of his parole.

When Toutoute threatens journalists…

When he left the Bail and Remand Court (BRC) in Port-Louis on Thursday January 2, Touloute appeared threatening towards members of the press. Escorted by CID bloodhounds, and handcuffed, he said in an aggressive tone: “Fer demars pa truv mo foto lor zournal mo pou eklat zot…”.

From 2000 to 2019, he accumulated four convictions

In 2019, arrested for a theft case by the Rivière-Noire police, Josian Sylvio Edmond was sentenced to six months in prison. In 2010, he received two fines of Rs 25,000 and Rs 10,000, as well as a year in prison for trafficking in heroin and possession of this drug.

In 2003, he was sentenced to three years in prison for cannabis trafficking, in addition to a fine of Rs 15,000. Three years later, then aged 22, he was sentenced to a fine of Rs 2,000 for possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia.
